What anxiety can look like

Anxiety isn't only feeling nervous. For many people it shows up as:

  • Worry that loops round and round, especially at night

  • Feeling on edge, tense or easily overwhelmed

  • Panic: a racing heart, tight chest or the sense that something terrible is about to happen

  • Avoiding calls, events, driving, or anything that might set the feeling off

  • Trouble sleeping, concentrating or switching off

  • Needing to check, plan or control things to feel okay

  • Stomachaches, headaches or tiredness without a clear cause

Anxiety can be tied to something specific, like a health scare, a new job, a move or a new baby. It can also be long-standing, a background hum you've lived with so long it feels like part of who you are. Sometimes anxiety sits on top of older painful experiences, which is why Lisa's trauma background can be useful here.

How Lisa helps

Lisa starts by getting to know you: what the anxiety feels like, when it shows up, what you've already tried, and what you'd like to be different. From there, the work is shaped around you. Depending on what fits, that may include:

  • Understanding the pattern. Noticing the thoughts, body signals and habits that keep anxiety going, so it feels less mysterious and less in charge.

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Looking at anxious thoughts and habits together, and practicing more balanced ways to respond.

  • Practical coping skills. Calming and grounding tools you can use in the moment, at work, at home or before sleep.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS). A gentle way to get to know the worried, protective "parts" of you with curiosity instead of criticism.

  • Guided meditations for inner child work. Gentle guided meditations to connect with younger parts of you that learned to be on guard.

  • EMDR or Brainspotting, when they fit. If anxiety is linked to distressing memories, these approaches may be part of the work (see EMDR Therapy and Trauma & PTSD Counseling).

  • Room for your values. Faith, family and community are welcome in the room. Clients of all levels of observance can read more on Orthodox Jewish Therapy.

What sessions are like

  • By secure video. You join from a private space you choose, without a commute.

  • A first session focused on your story and your goals. You don't need to have the right words; Lisa will help you find them.

  • A pace that feels manageable. Nobody will push you into something before you're ready.

  • Something to try between sessions, if that's helpful for you, like a short skill or noticing exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Can anxiety counseling be done online?

Yes. Lisa offers anxiety counseling by secure video for clients in New York, New Jersey and Israel. Many people find it easier to open up from a familiar, private space at home.

How do I know if my anxiety is "bad enough" for therapy?

If worry, panic or stress is getting in the way of your sleep, work, relationships or enjoyment of life, that's reason enough to talk to someone. You don't need a diagnosis, or for things to reach a breaking point, to start.

What is the difference between stress and anxiety?

Stress is usually a response to a specific pressure, like a deadline or a hard week, and tends to ease when the pressure passes. Anxiety often lingers, shows up without a clear cause, or feels bigger than the situation calls for.

Can past trauma cause anxiety?

It can. Painful or frightening experiences can leave the nervous system on high alert long after they're over. When that's part of the picture, Lisa can draw on her trauma training, including EMDR, Brainspotting and IFS.

How do I get started?

Start with a free 15-minute consultation. Call 516-313-9483 or use the contact page, and Lisa will talk with you about what's going on and whether working together is a good fit.
