Understanding trauma
Trauma isn’t defined only by what happened. It’s also about what an experience left behind. Sometimes the cause is clear: abuse, violence, an accident, a sudden loss. Sometimes it’s quieter: growing up where emotions weren’t safe, where love felt conditional, or where you felt unseen and unheard.
When trauma isn’t processed, it doesn’t simply stay in the past. It can show up as constant alertness, panic, numbness, nightmares, shame, trouble trusting others, or a feeling of being disconnected from yourself. These aren’t character flaws. They are often ways your mind and body learned to protect you.
PTSD and complex trauma
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can include intrusive memories, avoidance, feeling on edge, and changes in mood and beliefs after a traumatic event. “Complex trauma” is a term many people use for repeated or long-lasting experiences, often in childhood or in close relationships. You don’t need a diagnosis to reach out. A first conversation can help sort out what you’re experiencing and what kind of support makes sense.
How Lisa works with trauma
Lisa uses a personalized, integrative approach and adjusts the pace to you. Depending on your needs, therapy may draw on:
-
EMDR to help process distressing memories (see EMDR Therapy)
-
Internal Family Systems (IFS), where Lisa is a Level 2 practitioner, to understand the different “parts” of you that carry pain or work hard to protect you
-
STAIR (Skills Training in Affect and Interpersonal Regulation), which focuses on managing emotions and relationships
-
CBT and TF-CBT to notice and shift unhelpful thought patterns
-
Brainspotting and Narrative Therapy, which Lisa has post-graduate training in
EMDR and IFS together
EMDR and IFS are different tools. EMDR focuses on specific memories with bilateral stimulation. IFS focuses on the parts of you that hold pain or protect you. Lisa may use one or both, depending on what fits your history and goals. Early sessions usually emphasize safety and coping skills before any deeper memory work.
A significant part of Lisa’s work involves inner child healing: helping people learn to re-parent themselves with more self-compassion.
What to expect
-
A first session focused on your concerns, goals and history, at a pace that feels manageable. You don’t have to share everything at once.
-
Stability first. Before working directly with painful memories, you build skills for calming your body and handling strong emotions.
-
Processing when you’re ready. Memory work happens gradually, and you can pause at any time.
-
Privacy at home. Sessions are held over secure video from a private space of your choosing.
How long therapy lasts depends on your needs and goals. Some people come for a focused period; others benefit from longer-term support.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find a trauma therapist?
Look for a licensed clinician with specific training in trauma approaches such as EMDR, IFS or trauma-focused CBT, and ask how they pace treatment. Lisa Rosenblatt is an LCSW and EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist with Level 2 IFS training.
Can trauma therapy be done online?
Yes. Lisa provides trauma therapy, including EMDR, by secure video. Clients need to be physically located in New York or New Jersey at the time of each session.
What is the difference between EMDR and IFS for trauma?
EMDR targets distressing memories with bilateral stimulation. IFS works with the inner parts that carry pain or protect you. Lisa is trained in both and chooses based on your needs and pacing.
Do I have to talk about every detail of what happened?
No. You choose what to share and when. Approaches like EMDR and IFS don’t require you to describe every detail out loud, and the early sessions focus on building safety and coping skills.
What is complex PTSD?
Complex PTSD is a term used for the effects of repeated or prolonged trauma, often in childhood or close relationships. It can affect emotions, self-worth and relationships. Treatment usually starts with stability and moves gradually toward processing.
Where can I see you? What if I travel or move?
Lisa sees clients by secure video only in New York and New Jersey. You must be physically in a state where she is licensed during each session. If you travel or move out of NY/NJ, sessions generally pause until you are again in a licensed state.
Do you take insurance for trauma therapy?
We don’t accept insurance. We can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Check with your plan for details.
Is therapy confidential?
Therapy is confidential within the limits set by law and professional ethics (for example, when someone’s safety is at risk). Lisa will explain these limits in your first session.
Where we can see you
Lisa sees clients by secure video only and is licensed in New York and New Jersey. You need to be physically located in one of those states during your session.
